No clue about the backstory, but love listening to this song and headcannoning that this is an ace finding love and acceptance; believing that he's too broken and different to have this beautiful girl love him without him having to force himself into the "perfectly normal" box and then getting blindsided by her honest love for him, the real him; seeing him as perfect not broken, just as he is.
